About

Welcome to the Cove!

My name is Chris Garcia, and thank you for visiting my website! At the time of me creating this page, I am finishing my final semester here at Fresno State and graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in graphic design.  I grew up not too in touch with illustration; rather, my focus was to complete most of my general studies during high school.  Towards the end, however, I started to question myself about what I wanted to do for my future.  I contemplated, as I was not fully sure what I wanted when it came closer to choosing classes for college.  I then came to my final conclusion, which was to engage in graphic design to pursue illustration; that way, I can one day join the video game industry to be a part of a talented team of individuals making games.  Why games, you may ask, well I grew up as a kid playing many of them.  A lot of these games left a lasting impression on who I am and that is something that encourages me to develop my craft to one day be able to create virtual worlds that cause those same effects towards the younger generation coming before me.

The name SunnyArtz originated from the word “Sunny,” which sounds unusual, but holds great significance because it was given to me as a nickname by my girlfriend due to how high spirited and optimistic I was.  When thinking about the name, I realize I tend to try and look at the bright side of things and keep moving forward even during harsh conditions, which happens often during this kind of creative work.  Even after the struggle of doing illustration throughout my time here at Fresno State, I still loved to do it and felt proud of all the hard work I accomplished, hence the name SunnyArtz is born!

I am heavily inspired by old rubberhose style cartoons; the way eyes were drawn and the simplicity of character design really stood out to me.  One game that really shined this light for me was a game called Cuphead which was a 2D sidescroll platformer.  The charm of its wacky world, the swingy soundtrack, and its unique character design gave me a sense of comfort knowing how a simple art style can still be very effective if executed just right.

Thank you for taking the time to read about me!  I hope you tag along my art journey and enjoy my future art!  Have a great time here at the cove!
